How do we plan to accomplish our goal?
Here's the basic plan: Establish a physical location, a schedule of meetings, a set of hardware and software tools, a set of documented procedures and a team of faculty and students motivated to conduct the proposed research. We have already acquired and tested the computing hardware. Now we intend to develop the software, infrastructure and human expertise to leverage it.
How will we know when we succeed?
Quantitatively, success will be measured in two primary ways: paper publications and lessons that can be integrated into courses. Qualitatively we can measure research by publication impact factor, and education by survey of participants and students.
What Will be the benefits?
Research incurs real costs in terms of time and money. If our work discovers new ways to speed up algorithm research, the consequent productivity could have short term and long term monetary benefits for SVSU and beyond. Developing a center, CARDINAL, where faculty can develop and improve research collaboratively could help germinate and disseminate such knowledge, and more importantly, enthusiasm for engineering!
