The Computer Science & Information Systems Department offers four-year bachelor's degree programs in computer science and computer information systems. A minor in Computer Forensics or Computer Applications is available. Six faculty members (five full-time and one half-time) provide the majority of instruction in the department in both majors and service courses for other programs. Because of their strong hands-on skills, graduates are highly sought-after by industry. The Electrical Engineering Department offers a four-year ABET accredited program leading to the BSEE degree. Five full-time faculty members provide a wide variety of state-of-the-art courses reflecting the rapidly changing technology. The Mechanical Engineering Department offers a four-year ABET accredited program leading to the BSME degree. Eight full-time faculty (two Endowed Chairs) led the development of a Computer-Aided Laboratory and the development of computer-based coursework in nearly all courses. The Chemistry Department offers a curriculum that is approved by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society (ACS). A variety of degree options are available within the department that includes a major in chemistry (with optional ACS approval if desired), environmental chemistry, several interdisciplinary majors and a Master of Arts in Teaching (with major emphasis on the academic major of chemistry). The Department of Mathematical Science offers majors in Mathematics, Mathematics Teacher Certification B.S. degree, and Applied Mathematics (with emphases in or actuarial studies). The Physics Department offers four programs: Physics, Optical Physics, Chemical Physics and Physics Teacher Certification B.S. degree. The Biology Department offers programs: Biology and Biology Teacher Certification leading to the B.S. degree.
SVSU's student body is largely drawn from an eight-county population base of 500,000, although there is good representation from other states and a strong international exchange program. About 87.2% of the students are of traditional age while the other 12.8% returns to college for more education at a later age; the average age of the undergraduate student body is 22 and for graduate students - 33. Minority students represent about 14.74% (African-American, 9.95%; Hispanic, 3.19%; Native American, 0.4%; Multi-racial, 1.2%).
CS/CIS and Pre-CS/CIS majors have seen a slightly increase in majors and underrepresented students in the last two years from 289 students in 2011 to 304 students in 2013. Of those about 10% are female; 90% are male; about 75% are white, 21.08% minority, and 8.59% international students. Close to 69.5% of the undergraduate students live off campus.
